The brutal and deeply tragic case of Sara Sharif has left many around the world heartbroken and horrified. The abuse she endured, the betrayal by those meant to protect her, and the unimaginable suffering leading up to her death have rightly sparked widespread outrage.
As for the prison attack on Urfan Sharif, it’s a stark reminder of how the so-called “inmate code” works. In many prison systems, crimes against children are considered the most reviled, even by those who have committed other violent or serious crimes themselves. This often results in child abusers becoming targets inside.
While vigilante justice within prison walls might feel emotionally satisfying to some—especially in cases this egregious—it’s still a form of violence. The legal system has already handed down heavy sentences to all those responsible for Sara’s death, including a minimum of 40 years for Urfan. Prisons are meant to be places of punishment through law, not through further brutality.
