When he was only 14, the Tennessee-born singer โ whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord โ was โdabbling in marijuana and trouble,โ leading him to federal prison where over the next decade, he served several sentences for charges including felonies. He was even incarcerated when his daughter Bailee was born in 2008, according to Grammy News.
โEarly on in my songwriting I chose connection and honesty,โ Jelly Roll told Billboard of his heartfelt lyrics that share his journey of redemption. โI didnโt feel that it had to be songs that only seemed like everything was fine, especially when the songs that helped meโฆwere songs that you felt someone was speaking to you from an honest space about something you were going through. Speaking with the magazine about โSave Meโ โ one of the most emotionally charged tracks of his career โ Jelly said that he โwas in the thick of itโ when he and producer David Ray wrote the song during the pandemic lockdowns.
โI knew the lifestyle I was living at that moment wasnโt one that could be sustained. I needed to make changes in my life, and it was my personal cry for help,โ the โSon of a Sinnerโ singer shared of the chart-topping song.
In 2023, the father of two released a duet version with Lainey Wilson, and in 2024, rap and country collided when Eminem sampled the ballad in โSomebody Save Me,โ featuring vocals from Jelly Roll.
The lyrics hit hard: โSomebody save me, me from myselfโฆIโm a lost causeโฆIโm so damaged beyond repair.โ
